Susie Calvert is an artist originally from Belfast, now living and working in South East London. Following her studies at Camberwell College of Arts and The Royal Drawing School in 2020, she has continued to explore the materiality of paint and the contrast between the inner and outer worlds she inhabits.

Calvert’s work explores our human relationship with colour, space and playfulness, often balancing structure with spontaneity. Her paintings emerge through an intuitive process of layering, mark-making and experimentation, allowing the work to develop through the act of painting itself.

Recurring ideas of the seen and unseen, expansive patterns and colour experiments weave through her practice. She is drawn to the quiet poetry of her surroundings and the mundane beauty of everyday life, combining observed fragments with elements that are seen, felt and imagined. The familiar becomes a starting point for something less certain.

Journalling and meditation form part of Calvert’s creative practice, creating space for reflection and intuition. Words and phrases arrive unexpectedly and find their way into her work.

Calvert allows the process of observing to guide her, remaining open to what might reveal itself through her own life and perspective.
